What types of residency are available in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica has long been a desirable place to set new roots, with this comes figuring out your options as far as obtaining your residency here in the country.  There are 3 ways most foreigners obtain their residency in Costa Rica:

1-Investor: Invest $150,000 USD into a property, a business, and/or a vehicle can also be considered part of the investment in addition to property.

2-Pensionado: This stands for retiree and requires receiving a pension of no less then $1000 USD monthly.

3: Rentista: This option requires putting $60,000 USD into a CD portfolio for 2 years (which is returned).

We recommend working with an attorney to best understand which option works best for your financial and lifestyle structure, considering things like travel are important as depending on the residency type as you may be required to stay in Costa Rica a certain amount of time per year as a requirement to maintain and renew residency.

As permanent residents in Costa Rica for over 30 years, as well as court appointed translators for the local Garabito courts for over a decade, we understand the nuances of navigating paperwork and the costarican systems, that's why we have created a powerful network of allies to provide our clients with the best personalized service available.
