We believe in empowering our clients with education to provide a clear understanding on the important details and nuances of keeping everything up to date in Costa Rica.
No matter where you live in Costa Rica, when owning a corporation whether local or foreign; there is a separate stamp fee called TEC, standing for Timbre de Educacion y Cultura, which means Education and Culture Stamp, that is paid separately from your corporation tax.
If you have an attorney overseeing your corporation this should be included in your fees, if you're wanting to take care of things yourself, or to simply have an understanding of the legal requirements to keep your corporation up to date this is how it works...
If you want to pay online you will have to have a local bank account, if you don't have residency you can open what's called a "simplified account", this allows you to transact up to $1000 USD per month enabling you to pay the stamp fee directly from your costarican account digitally, the option is usually in the drop down list of payment options as its own category, the TEC stamp fee is a relatively small fee (less then 10,000 colones) which is paid annually in February and March each year. You can can also pay this fee at the bank in person if you don't have an account set up yet and are not working with an attorney after you've purchased your property or simply own corporations in the country.
We've included information about the TEC stamp fee in our buyers guide which is linked below. Don't hesitate to contact us with any questions or topics you would like to know more about [email protected] [email protected]
